This week in time, October of 1989, the Thompson World Series is postponed until November 5th due to the collapsing of stands between sections F&G.

They couldn't do stand-room only?

Actually, for the number injured, it could have been much worse for being a front stretch collapse.  They lost a good 10 plus rows.  Oh yeah, who was in attendence on this weekend but some kid named Jeff Gordon.

Howie, do you have some pictures as well?

Open wheel'ers like Gordon will never make it in NASCAR ;-)

I was about 20 feet away from the collapse of the stands at Thompson that day. Saw the whole thing happen. From what i remember 100 people just vanished / dropped from in front of us. Then people started running and climbing over other people trying to get away from the hole / colapse. Very weird experience. On the way out after the race was canceled i remember looking at the stands and thinking no wonder the colapsed..they were pretty rotten.
